Journey of Change: Women Pushing Boundaries
2nd December - 12th December
In October 2014 a team of women embarked on a grueling round the world yacht race - the Volvo Ocean Race.
It had been twelve years since an all-female team had competed in this 40,000-mile offshore challenge around the world and, after two years of training, they were ready to compete against the very best male sailors on the world.
In June 2015, after seven hard fought stages of the Race, Team SCA made history by becoming the first all-female team to win a leg of this male dominated race in 25 years.
With every mile that they raced, Team SCA also took with them an army of 'virtual' supporters and at each stopover they were overwhelmed by the support and encouragement. While they completed their physical and mental 'Everest' in the world's oceans, they inspired men and women both young and old of all ages to do more, and to be more.
Supported by SCA, who itself was on a journey of change to increase its awareness and perception as one of the world's leading global hygiene and forest products companies, Team SCA also created a global competition in partnership with Getty Images aimed at empowering women to become professional photographers.
The Team SCA Academy sought to encourage, inspire and support female photographers around the world. The ten winners each visited a stopover and, in keeping with SCA's core message of promoting the opportunity for women to participate fully in society: socially, educationally and professionally, they each created a portfolio of images that celebrated the awe inspiring women from all walks of life that they met during a stopover.
This exhibition encapsulates the journey of change both of Team SCA and the women they met as they raced around the world - all of them collectively pushing at boundaries and challenging stereotypes.
